Frequently Asked Questions

What ages are your classes designed for?

We welcome students of all ages, from young children to teens and adults. While every child develops at their own pace, each instrument has a recommended starting age based on the coordination, focus, and physical development typically needed to enjoy and succeed with that instrument. In general, children ages 5–8 are well-suited for piano, ukulele, voice, and violin. Instruments that require greater hand strength, coordination, or lung development—such as guitar, drums, viola, flute, clarinet, saxophone, and trumpet—are often best suited for children around 8–10 years old. If you’re unsure whether your child is ready, we’d be happy to help you choose the instrument that’s the best fit.

Do I need any musical experience to participate?

Not at all! Our lessons are designed for students of all experience levels, from complete beginners to more advanced musicians. Whether you’ve never picked up an instrument before or you’re looking to build on existing skills, our teachers will tailor each lesson to your individual goals, experience, and learning style.

What is the role of a parent or guardian during music lessons?

Parents and guardians are always welcome to sit in on lessons if they and their child feel comfortable doing so. While students are encouraged to develop independence as they grow, parental support at home is invaluable. Helping maintain a regular practice schedule and encouraging your child’s musical journey can greatly enhance their progress and help foster a lifelong love of music.

What are the benefits of music classes for young children?

Music lessons provide benefits that extend far beyond learning an instrument. Research has shown that early musical experiences can support language development, listening skills, coordination, creativity, memory, concentration, confidence, and social development. Just as importantly, learning music teaches patience, perseverance, and problem-solving while giving children a fun and creative outlet for self-expression. Above all, music lessons help foster a lifelong love of learning through an activity children genuinely enjoy.

How long are the classes?

Lesson lengths vary based on the student’s age, attention span, experience, and individual goals. Most beginners start with 30-minute weekly lessons, which provide an excellent foundation for learning. As students grow in skill and commitment, many choose to transition to 45- or 60-minute lessons for more in-depth instruction. Longer lesson options are available based on teacher availability.

Do children need their own instruments?

Yes, in most cases students should have access to an instrument at home. Regular practice between lessons is one of the most important factors in making steady progress. Having an instrument available allows students to reinforce what they learned during their lesson, build confidence, and develop good practice habits. If you’re unsure which instrument is right for your child, our teachers are happy to provide recommendations for purchasing or renting.

What will my child learn in music lessons?

Every lesson is designed to build a strong musical foundation while keeping learning fun and engaging. Depending on the student’s age, instrument, and goals, lessons may include reading music, rhythm, ear training, technique, music theory, creativity, and performance skills. Students also develop important life skills such as confidence, patience, discipline, problem-solving, and perseverance as they progress on their musical journey.

How often should my child attend classes?

We recommend attending lessons once each week. Consistent attendance helps students build confidence, retain what they learn, and make steady progress from lesson to lesson. Just as importantly, regular attendance establishes a routine that encourages practice and long-term success.

Do you offer trial lessons?

Yes! We offer discounted trial lessons for just $21. A trial lesson gives both the student and teacher an opportunity to get to know one another, discuss goals, and make sure it’s a great fit before enrolling in weekly lessons. It’s a relaxed, no-pressure way to experience Melody Makers Music Academy and begin your musical journey with confidence.

What if I miss a lesson?
